This substantial change in policy means that we won’t have to wait for a disturbance to meet the technical requirements of a tropical cyclone (such as having a well-defined center of circulation or sufficiently organized thunderstorm activity) to issue forecasts or post warnings. Starting this year, NHC has the option to issue advisories, track and intensity forecasts, watches, and warnings for disturbances that are not yet a tropical cyclone, but which pose the threat of bringing tropical storm or hurricane conditions to land areas within 48 hours.

How powerful hurricane Tomas gets we won’t know for a couple of days but some forecasters are saying it could be an extremely dangerous storm. At this stage it’s difficult to say exactly where Tomas will aim it’s fury but Jamaica is one island that is right in the middle of the forecast cone of uncertainty at the moment. On the current forecast track Tomas is likely to bring hurricane force winds to St Lucia.Īfter passing through the Leeward Islands hurricane Tomas will be over warm water and with low wind shear is expected to intensify and could become a powerful and large hurricane by Tuesday or Wednesday next week. After that Tomas will probably be a Category 1 hurricane and will head towards St Vincent and St Lucia, currently forecast to pass between the islands. Tomas is currently passing just to the south of Barbados, who can expect to feel tropical storm force winds and experience 3 to 5 inches of rain. Tomas, the 19th named storm of the season, will be hurricane Tomas within a few hours and is going to threaten the Caribbean.
